Stories of Impactful Giving
A Life of Service: Jim Cardman
For more than two decades, Jim Cardman has quietly logged over 15,000 volunteer hours at Fisher-Titus. You’ll find him in the Emergency Department offering a calm presence, or behind the wheel, driving Norwalk Memorial Home and Carriage House residents to and from appointments—especially those without nearby family.
“This is where I’m meant to be,” Jim says. “Some of the folks I drive don’t have anyone else. If I can help them get the care they need, that’s what I’m here for.”
To Jim, volunteering isn’t just a way to pass time—it’s a mission grounded in kindness and connection.

Holiday Cheer from the Heart: Allen Ruggles
Every December, Allen Ruggles makes his way to the Fisher-Titus Gift Shop with his daughter to pick out Christmas gifts for the whole family. It’s a heartfelt tradition, and one he looks forward to each year.
“I like knowing that every gift I buy here does some good,” Allen shares. “The volunteers always help me wrap everything just right—and it all goes back to support the hospital and the people who live here with me.”
His purchases bring joy not only to his loved ones, but also to the patients and residents who benefit from Gift Shop proceeds.

Kindness Behind the Counter: Vera
For more than a decade, Vera has been a constant, caring presence in the Fisher-Titus Gift Shop. Whether she’s helping someone find the perfect card or wrapping a thoughtful gift, she does it with warmth and purpose.
“I’ve always felt called to help people,” Vera says. “Working in the Gift Shop gives me the chance to brighten someone’s day—whether it’s a patient, a visitor, or a staff member rushing in on their break.”
She helps ensure the Gift Shop remains a comforting stop for those walking through uncertain moments—and every purchase she rings up supports future care for others.
