Of Primary Importance: An Oberlin Resident and a Fisher-Titus Family Medicine Physician Talk About Why You Should Have a Primary Care Doctor

Why-You-Should-Have-Primary-Care-Doctor

Richard Ruggieri-Katz and Family Medicine Physician Christina A. Canfield, M.D.

As Oberlin resident Richard Ruggieri-Katz approached his 40s, he knew it was time to seriously
consider finding a long-term health care gatekeeper – the best possible primary care physician
for him and his family.
“I have type 2 diabetes, thyroid disease, high blood pressure and asthma,” says Richard, now
50. “I need someone to help me keep them under control, and be connected to excellent
specialists.”

A Long Search, A Rewarding Result

About 10 years ago, a relative of Richard’s recommended Family Medicine physician
Christina Canfield, MD. Dr. Canfield is a member of the Fisher-Titus Medical Care physician
group who has served the community in and around Wakeman for two decades.

Richard’s primary care search ended. “Dr. Canfield is approachable, compassionate,
knowledgeable and respectful,” he says. “I want to be able to talk with my family doctor and be
heard, and that’s exactly what happens.”

Richard and his partner, who have resided in Oberlin for 10 years, have an adopted daughter.
Dr. Canfield has a great rapport with her as well.

“She is the best family doctor I’ve had,” Richard adds. “My daughter is 12, and I plan on having
her see Dr. Canfield, too.”

The Philosophy of Family Medicine

Richard says he feels at home with Dr. Canfield, who views her role as one of advocacy and of
caring for the whole patient. “If you’re only seeing a heart doctor for one issue, a kidney doctor
for another and a skin doctor for something else, it’s likely that no one is watching out for your
total well-being,” Dr. Canfield says. “As a Family Medicine physician, I often care for the
physical, social, emotional and even spiritual aspects of a patient.”

Richard, now a stay-at-home dad, echoes that philosophy of care. “I completely trust Dr.
Canfield with my health. I wouldn’t consider bringing my daughter to see her if I didn’t.”
Both patient and physician know the importance of building a strong relationship with a primary
care provider regardless of age or health status, and having a Fisher-Titus physician as your
family’s health care gatekeeper offers enhanced benefits.

“Many doctors like me in the North Central Ohio community are members of Fisher-Titus
Medical Care, which provides a structure that helps us increase patient safety and improve
care,” observes Dr. Canfield. “Our Fisher-Titus affiliation also gives our patients access to a
range of the best specialists, primary care doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and
state-of-the-art testing and surgical capabilities right here in their community.”

As Richard summarizes it, “You can tell that quality of care is first and foremost at Fisher-Titus,
and with Dr. Canfield and her staff.”
