Where can you find both watermelon sherbet and cantaloupe ice cream?
At the Milan Melon Festival, of course! The wildly popular annual festival will be held Sept. 3-5 this year on the Village Square in Milan, Ohio. The festival was launched in 1958 and draws thousands of people each year.
But wait, you may be thinking, “I’m trying to eat healthy.” A day at the festival means not just ice cream, but delicious french fries, kielbasa, ribs, bourbon chicken, cheesesteak and corn dogs.
Not to worry. Burn off those extra calories by registering to run the Milan Melon Festival 5K, sponsored by Fisher-Titus Medical Center. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at Edison Elementary School. There are divisions for men and women of all age groups including 11 and under and 70 and over. It also features the playfully named “Watermelon Division” for men 225 pounds and over, as well as a 1-mile Fun Run.
In addition to the run, the festival lineup includes the Beautiful Baby Contest, a parade, car show, entertainment and rides. The weekend culminates with the crowing of the Milan Melon Festival Queen at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 3 on the Main Stage.
While the festival has become quite famous throughout Ohio, Milan, is also well-known as the birthplace of Thomas Edison and is home to the Thomas A. Edison Birthplace Museum. The museum is normally open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, but will be closed during the festival due to parking limitations. That just means there’s another reason to return to this charming town.
The folks at Fisher-Titus Medical Center are happy to be involved in both the town of Milan and the Milan Melon Festival.
“Fisher-Titus Family Medicine is proud to serve the local residents of Berlin Heights and Milan,” says Beth Dille, the executive director of Fisher-Titus Medical Care.
Fisher-Titus has an office in Milan with convenient evening hours and same-day appointments are often available, too. “We know that, with school starting soon, families will be busy, and we are here for them,” Dille adds.
And how about the ice cream? “The ice cream is amazing,” Dille says with a laugh. “But be sure to sign up for the run, too.”
So come and join in on the fun at the Milan Melon Festival and make sure to register for the 5K race.
