Fisher-Titus has introduced the capability to perform in-house testing for the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).
The Luminex ARIES® equipment recently purchased by Fisher-Titus performs the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for COVID-19. PCR tests are used to directly detect the presence of an antigen, which is a foreign substance that causes an immune response in the body. The Luminex ARIES® was approved for testing by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization.
“What this means for the community is now that we have in-house testing capability, we are able to get results much faster than we have been able to by sending the test out to another lab. Instead of waiting a few days for results, we can have them in just a few hours,” said Rodney Tuttle, BS, MT(ASCP), CLS, director of laboratory services at Fisher-Titus. “In addition, this test allows Fisher-Titus to tell whether or not someone has the virus early on allowing for more timely treatment of the symptoms and better outcomes for the patient.”
In addition, the Luminex ARIES® equipment will allow Fisher-Titus to test more people. Fisher-Titus plans to partner with four local nursing homes to provide testing for their symptomatic residents as well as for the testing of people before they are admitted to the nursing home. Testing will also be used for healthcare workers and surgery patients before their procedure.
