Wound Care Home Remedies to Try


Cuts, scrapes, burns and scratches are a common side-effect of an exciting life. Your daughter bruised her knee at the playground. Your spouse burned his hand making omelets for brunch. You scraped your leg up while pruning the rose bushes.


To be sure, not every boo-boo needs medical attention. But, at the same time, we can all do a little better than a quick wipe with a wet paper towel and sticking on a bandage.

With that in mind, here are a few wound care home remedies to get you or your loved one healing a little bit faster. The first step, however, is always to properly clean your wound. Using water and a gentle soap, remove all dirt and debris.


Scientists believe that the sweet stuff contains antioxidants, amino acids and minerals that make it able to kill both the bacteria and the fungi that infect wounds. But you can’t just use the stuff in your cabinet, which may contain pollen and bacteria — instead buy medical-grade honey.

Tea Tree Oil

In general, this is just a great thing to have in your medicine cabinet. It has the antibacterial qualities needed to make it one of the best wound care home remedies. It can also be used to treat everything from acne to dry cuticles.

Lavender Oil

Like tea tree oil, this essential oil has been shown to have antibacterial properties, but it was also found in one study to reduce pain from wounds. Plus, it just smells really good and can be used in your aromatherapy diffuser to relieve stress and boost your mood.

Aloe Vera Gel

If you have a severe burn, you need to head right to the hospital. But even mild burns can keep you up at night. Aloe vera is a known home remedy for burns—and sunburns. Just make sure the product you’re using is at least 99 percent pure. Having an aloe vera plant in your home is one of the easiest ways to always keep wound care home remedies on hand.

Good Food and Water

Your body requires more energy and nutrients than usual when it’s trying to heal. So cut back on refined sugar and processed foods, and be sure to get plenty of lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and water. Foods containing zinc, including oysters, beef, pumpkin and spinach, also promote healing.


It’s one thing to heal a wound, but quite another to prevent a scar. Bromelain is extracted from the pineapple plant and is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps prevent scarring. Although it’s available over the counter, you should consult your doctor before taking any supplement.


We all know this tea is supposed to be relaxing, but it’s also known for healing wounds, especially blisters. Make a chamomile compress by soaking a few chamomile tea bags in water, lightly draining some of the liquid, and then wrapping the tea bags around your wound with some gauze.

While home remedies can be very effective, there are some times when you should seek immediate medical attention, including cuts that won’t stop bleeding, severe burns, infections and wounds that won’t heal.
